A Guide to Wine Storage in Singapore: Tips for Storing Wine in a Humid Climate

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

If you're a wine lover in Singapore, you know that storing your bottles in a humid climate can be a challenge. Excessive heat and humidity can damage the wine and affect its flavor. But with the right storage techniques, you can ensure that your wine stays in perfect condition and is ready to drink whenever you want. Here are some tips for storing wine in a humid climate and recommendations for three wines perfect for your collection.

Find a cool and dark place

In Singapore, there are few places that are both cool and dark enough for ideal wine storage, so it usually means storage in a fridge. Ideally, the temperature should be between 12-14°C, but anything between 10-20°C is acceptable. Heat and light can cause wine to age prematurely, and finding a cool and dark place to store your bottles is essential for long-term storage. Avoid storing your wine near windows or in direct sunlight as this can heat up the wine and cause it to spoil.

Keep the humidity level in check

Humidity is crucial in wine storage, but too much of it can cause mold to grow and ruin the wine label. On the other hand, too little humidity can affect the cork, causing air to seep into the bottle and spoil the wine. For wines with screwcaps, humidity issues will not have as much of an effect as with cork stoppers. Aim for a humidity level between 50-80% by using a humidifier or dehumidifier (if you have the space to accommodate them with your wines). Again, in Singapore achieving this level of humidity control will be very hard to control without mechanical means, which brings us to the next tip.

Invest in a wine fridge or cellar

We should probably put this as the first tip, especially if you are serious about wine storage- consider investing in a wine fridge or cellar. These specialized storage units are designed to maintain the ideal temperature and humidity level, ensuring that your wine stays in perfect condition. Wine fridges are suitable for smaller collections, while cellars are better for larger collections.

Store wine horizontally

For wines with cork stoppers, storing wine horizontally helps keep the cork moist and prevents air from seeping into the bottle. This is especially important in humid climates where the humidity can cause the corks to degrade quickly. For wines with screwcaps, however, you will have a choice on whether to store your wines standing up or lying flat.

Storing wine bottles flat also allows more wines to be stacked in a tighter space, and laying the bottles flat may increase the visual appeal of the wine bottles by having the labels facing upwards. It also has the advantage of keeping your wines stable for years to come.

Keep track of your wine

Finally, after investing in proper storage and storing your wines, it's time to bring it another step further by keeping track of your wine collection. You can track it easier by organising it according to the type, region, or age of the wine. Additionally, keeping the wines you will drink regularly in the front of the fridge, will help make it easier to find the perfect bottle for any occasion and prevent any wine from being forgotten or left to spoil.
